This storage space calculator adds up the space your photos, videos, music and documents will take, using realistic per-file sizes you can adjust. Use it the other way round too: pick a drive or phone size and see how many files fit. Everything is calculated in your browser.

Typical file sizes

File typeTypical sizeNotes
Smartphone photo (JPEG/HEIC)2–5 MB12–48 MP; HEIC is roughly half the size of JPEG
Professional photo / RAW10–25 MBRAW files from a full-frame camera can exceed 50 MB
1080p video~300 MB per minutePhones at 30 fps; 60 fps roughly doubles it
4K video~700 MB per minuteHigher bitrates (ProRes, 4K RAW) can reach 1.5 GB per minute
Song (MP3 320 kbps)~5 MBFLAC lossless ~10 MB, hi-res audio ~30 MB
PDF / Office document0.5–2 MBScanned or image-heavy documents can be 10 MB+

How many photos or videos fit in 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB?

Using the typical sizes above (5 MB photos, 300 MB/min for 1080p, 700 MB/min for 4K, 5 MB songs) and decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000 MB):

CapacityPhotos1080p video4K videoSongs
64 GB~12,800~3.5 hours~1.5 hours~12,800
128 GB~25,600~7 hours~3 hours~25,600
256 GB~51,200~14 hours~6 hours~51,200
512 GB~102,400~28 hours~12 hours~102,400
1 TB~200,000~55 hours~24 hours~200,000

Real devices reserve space for the operating system and apps, so treat these as upper limits — a 128 GB phone typically has 100–110 GB free out of the box.

Why does a 1 TB drive show only 931 GB?

Manufacturers sell drives in decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 109 bytes), while Windows reports binary gibibytes (1 GiB = 230 bytes) and labels them "GB". 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes ÷ 1,073,741,824 = 931 GiB. Nothing is missing; the units differ. Our data size converter switches between the two.

How much phone storage do you need?

64 GB suits light use with cloud backup; 128 GB is the sensible default for most people; 256 GB or more if you shoot a lot of 4K video, keep large games installed, or store music offline. Video is by far the biggest consumer — one hour of 4K uses more space than 8,000 photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

About 25,000 photos at a typical 5 MB each, or roughly 50,000 smartphone photos at 2–3 MB. RAW photos at 25 MB would fill 128 GB after about 5,000 shots.

Around 42 GB at a typical 700 MB per minute. Bitrate matters more than resolution: 4K at a low bitrate can be 20 GB per hour, while 4K RAW or ProRes can exceed 90 GB per hour.

The drive is sold in decimal gigabytes (10^9 bytes) but the operating system reports binary gibibytes (2^30 bytes) and calls them GB. 1 TB works out to 931 GiB; no space is missing.

128 GB is enough for most people. Choose 64 GB only if you rely on cloud backup and take few videos; choose 256 GB or more if you record 4K video, install large games or keep a big offline music library.

A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000,000,000 bytes; a gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes, about 7.4% larger. Storage makers use GB, most operating systems display GiB.
